Now that winter is well and truly here, it’s time to think about beating the winter blues. A lot of us tend to feel down during the winter and this is largely to do with the weather. Though your home should be a place for you to relax and unwind in comfort, it can be difficult when the outside temperatures drop and the weather is less than desirable. Whilst you are waiting for some summer sun, there are things you can do to help beat the winter blues at home.
Add Warmth To Your Home This Winter
Coloured Lighting – To bring both light and colour into the room, try using light fixtures made of coloured glass, or even candles in coloured glass jars or lanterns. Including multiple sources of low-level lighting is a great way to ensure your home is inviting, and the colours will provide warmth.
Embrace Reflective Decor – Though a lot of people initially assume that reflective accessories are best suited to modern rooms, this isn’t always the case. Adding reflective and metallic pieces into any type of home is a great way to create warmth and space. This is also the case for mirrors. They create colour, light and can help a room to appear bigger than it actually is.
Get Creative with Wall Art – Artwork on the walls which sparks joy within you is a guaranteed way to make you feel welcome and homey. Prints can be bought very affordably, however why not try making some yourself or with the kids? This will add some feel-good spirit for the dark winter period.
Add Soft Furnishings – A great way to beat the winter blues in your home is to make every room feel as cosy and as comfortable as possible. Cushions, throws, rugs and blankets are ideal for this. With so many options available, you’ll have a tonne of choice and you won’t want to be anywhere else.
Use Bright and Warm Paint Colours – If you are looking to add warmth and colour to a room, consider swapping existing paint colours for those that are bright and bold. It’s a fantastic way to bring colour, life and warmth into a home. This is sure to keep the winter blues at bay. A new lick of paint can completely transform a room and it creates an entirely new mood. Adding colourful accents can be a fantastic way to bring some new colour into your scheme without requiring a huge amount of work. Keeping the walls neutral, you can complement with either brightly-painted woodwork, a feature wall, or some key pieces in your colour of choice, for example blankets/throws for the sofa or an ornate clock.
Elements of Nature – Bold floral patterns are a great choice to cheer things up during the winter months. Last year Graham & Brown selected a beautiful floral wallpaper print for 2018 to complement their Colour of the Year Penelope; the print, named Pierre after Pierre Magnol, the esteemed botanist whose name was given to the large flower species Magnolia. Take some inspiration for your own floral-inspired haven. If you prefer the real thing, try Poinsettia and similar plants; these are easy to care for and bring a flash of colour.
